Yarra Youth Commitment

Vision: “A commitment to working together as a community to enable positive
education and employment outcomes for all young people in the City of Yarra.”

With much enthusiasm and interest from the Yarra Education Forum in November 2010, the Yarra Youth Commitment has since formed a Steering Committee, developed a Terms of Reference and name as the ‘Yarra Education Youth Commitment’.

The Yarra Education Youth Commitment Network is made up of education and training providers, community agencies, Council, government departments, employers and individuals who are committed to the vision of the Youth Commitment. The aim of the Network is to develop a strategic response to issues facing local young people. Through a consultative process at the Education Forum and initial Network meetings, three focus areas have been identified as priorities for action in Yarra.

They are:

1. Coordination   Aim: to improve coordination and linkages between school, education and training providers, community, businesses and government service providers

2. Career Pathways   Aim: to improve access and opportunities to education, training and employment pathway outcomes for young people beyond school

3. Transitions (Primary to Secondary – Grade 6 to Year 9)   Aim: to improve the transition of young people from primary to secondary school improving retention and disengagement from school read more...

Members of the Network are encouraged to participate in one of the three focus areas to consolidate the case and determine appropriate strategies for action. Each focus area is facilitated by a member (or members) of the Steering Committee. Current Network meetings are structured around these three focus areas.

Strategic Priorities and Action Plan 2011-2012 & Events

A Strategic Priorities and Action Plan 2011-2012 (link below) has been developed by the Network and identifies a number of key actions. While the Network will work its way through these actions over the next 12 months, three major events will move the YEYC into an exciting new phase for 2012 :-)

Steering Committee

The Yarra Education Youth Commitment has a Steering Committee with representatives from the following organisations:

City of Yarra (CoY), Inner Northern Local Learning and Employment Network (INLLEN), School Focused Youth Service (SFYS),  Brotherhood of St. Laurence, Department of Human Services (DHS), Jesuit Community College, Yarra Careers Teacher, Yarra School Principal and Seven Ways Consultancy.

The Steering Committee meets in between the broader Network meetings and is charged with ensuring that the Network retains a strategic rather than reactive direction.

    Network Meetings

Network meetings are held bi-monthly at rotating venues around Yarra, providing a fantastic opportunity to explore the rich and varied education and service provider settings in the region. Taking ownership of the Network, each member is able to contribute to the agenda and utilise this opportunity to build strong and lasting partnerships with fellow members.

    Background

In 2010 the Yarra Education Support Network, a partnership initiative between City of Yarra Youth Services, INLLEN, Youth Connections, School Focused Youth Service, Catholic Education Office and Centrelink realised the importance of partnerships to support education and community providers to ensure young people remain engaged in education and transition effectively.

This Network organised the Yarra Education Forum to workshop the issues facing the achievement of this aim. The Forum took place on the 9th of November 2010 and was attended by over 60 participants from the community, education and government sectors. Feedback from the forum suggested a strong need for a strategic network that collectively focuses on key issues relating to youth education, employment and training.
