Keeping it Real- Deadly Pathways" is an event designed to highlight study and career opportunities for Aboriginal youth in the northern region of Melbourne in areas such as:
These industries are all located in the local area and offer excellent career opportunities to young Aboriginal people wanting to enter these occupations.
The event highlighted how indigenous young people can gain entry into these occupations.
Description
Students from surrounding schools attend Northland Ntec to participate in a day that promotes pathways that young Aboriginal people would not consider in some traditional trade areas.
The students listen to a number of inspiring speakers (young and old) from the community that have chosen non-traditional pathways, they tell stories about how at first most were scaried and unsure about working in mainstream jobs. Their stories also speak of how they found out it was great to be accepted by their work mates and proud of the job they did.
Ntec staff then lead the student through a number of practical activities, showing them some types skill that they would require. The students also complete a practical project using some of the skill they have learnt on the day.
