From My School to Our School Forum

Parents and families are one of the LLEN’s key stakeholder groups. Much research surrounds the critical role that parents and families play in improving the outcomes for their children in education and life outcomes. If parents and families are engaged in their children’s learning, then it is more likely that their children will perform better at school, and in their transition from school.

There has been an increased focus in the education policy around the need for ‘parents as partners’ in their children’s learning as well as the importance of ‘family-school-community partnerships’, however challenges remain in its implementation.

Aim

  • To understand the current local context of parent and family engagement in learning within the education and community sectors
  • To determine and create the right environment that achieves effective parent and family engagement for communities/schools in the inner northern region of Melbourne

Description

This project is supported by a Steering Committee (see list below). An Action Plan outlining the potential components of the project has been developed and endorsed by the Steering Committee. Using the three phases of Data Gathering and Consultation, Data Evaluation and Data Implementation, the aim is to develop a two-three year strategic plan for implementation in 2012.

It is envisaged that the plan will outline practical strategies for implementation that will result in meaningful outcomes for the young people, families, schools and communities involved.
