The Pacific Pathways project was established in March 2010 in response to concerns raised by secondary schools in Moreland.

Aim
The aim of the Pacific Pathways is to empower Pacific Island young people to discuss and identify key issues affecting Pacific Island young people and explore possible solutions to address these issues.

Key Objectives

  • To improve self identity of students at secondary schools in the City of Moreland
  • To enhance and increase student engagement and connection with schools
  • To promote cultural awareness and understanding amongst students, families, teachers and broader community
  • To address cultural dynamics that impact on Pacific Island young people’s mental health concerns, especially family violence and substance abuse
  • To develop a collaborative relationship between the project partners
  • To produce a DVD or an introductory resource kit to assist Pacific Island community families enrolling their young people in secondary schools

Pacific Island Community Consultation day

Focus group sessions with Pacific Island young people from Brunswick Secondary College, John Fawkner College and Glenroy College have been conducted to achieve the aims and objectives of the project. As a result, a Pacific Island Community Consultation day was held. Read more about the Pacific Island Community Consultation day here...

Pacific Island Cultural Awareness and Understanding

The second phase of the project involves the development of a Pacific Island cultural awareness and understanding resource / presentation for teachers in schools. Focus group sessions have continued  with Brunswick Secondary College students to achieve these outcomes.

An idea that has developed from the focus group session is the creation of Pacific Voices, a wikispace for Pacific Island young people to connect with each other online. Pacific Voices focuses on how we can better support Pacific Island young people in school, home and within the community.

We encourage all Pacific Island young people to check out Pacific Voices and if you think you could help us by contributing your stories, thoughts and ideas we'd really appreciate it. Click Pacific Voices wikispace to go to the link...
