Furthering the work of the Moreland Youth Commitment, INLLEN in partnership with Moreland City Council facilitated a School-Business Roundtable Working Breakfast at the Civic Centre on Wednesday the 31st August. The aim was to create a forum for potential partnerships to be created to better support outcomes for young people in Moreland.

Mayor of Moreland, Oscar Yildiz opened by reflecting on his personal experience as a teacher and the power to influence young people and make a difference in their lives. A big thank you to our brilliant MC - Mike McIntosh, Moreland Council’s Economic Development Manager who did a great job harnessing the good will in the room which contributed to some meaningful discussions between schools and businesses.

Our star presenters were two Year 10 students from John Fawkner College, Adam Bortoletti & Deniz Varel. The students eloquently related their experience of being involved in a mentoring program managed by Minter Ellison Lawyers, who have had a long sustained partnership with John Fawkner College.

Joe Villani from Bayford Motors, a Moreland Youth Commitment Industry Ambassador, shared why the company has had such success over the last seven years working with schools. He is passionate about engaging with young people in School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and Structured Workplace Learning Placements while they are still at school and exposing them to the automotive industry which has faced skill shortages.

Some of the businesses present at the Breakfast include: Minter Ellison Lawyers, NAB, Bendigo Bank, Bayford Motors, Cryovac, Valve Tec Engineering, Sutton Tools, BAS Foods, John Fawkner Private Hospital, APlus, Bunnings Warehouse, Moreland City Council, Fawkner Crematorium, NCI Packaging, Brunswick Police Station, and Brad Teal Real Estate.

Moreland schools represented were: The Island, Mercy College, John Fawkner College, Glenroy College, Brunswick Secondary College, Sydney Road Community School, and Pascoe Vale Girls College.

This inaugural Working Breakfast is only the beginning of a much broader industry engagement strategy that intend to build strong and meaningful partnerships between Moreland schools and local business. Watch this space!!

From My School to Our School

“Strengthening learning relationships between school, family and community”

120 people from schools, community organisations, local government and the education sector converged at the From My School to Our School Forum Wednesday 17 August at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Moonee Ponds.

Following a fitting Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder, Bill Nicholson, the theme was set by David Kennedy (INLLEN EO). We know that parents and families play a key role in their children’s education and life outcomes, so how can we strengthen these relationships in our schools and community?

The Forum featured the humour, stories and insights from keynote speakers, Dr George Otero and Danielle Cronin, and 24 diverse Table Presentations representing schools, community organisations and the education sector. Delegates had the opportunity to connect with presenters and peers through the sharing of strategies, initiatives, and useful learnings. Many delegates also came away with practical resources and contacts to support them in their own settings.

INLLEN would like to thank Forum Sponsors, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), Cambridge University Press and Kwik Kopy, the Working Group for the Forum, the Steering Committee and staff who assisted on the day, Table Presenters and Delegates, who all contributed to the value of the event.

The Forum was a component of the Inner Northern Parent and Family Engagement Project see documents and presentations from Table Presentations and Keynote Speakers here...
