This year’s YAMEC Employment Project is drawing to a close and after 8 busy weeks, the students can now take time to reflect on their learnings and begin putting them into practice.

Supported by a number of valuable project partners, this year’s program incorporated a series of informative and interesting sessions which took the students on a journey of discovery - unpacking their career aspirations, discovering the Australian workplace and preparing for that first interview. Complementing the classroom work were industry visits to Linfox Australia, Cryovac Solid Packaging, Big W and the City of Yarra Aged and Disability Services.

The First Stop Program delivered an interactive and thought provoking session on Pathways Planning, Hopes and Dreams. Australian Workplace Culture was explored at the Centre for Work and Learning and Sarina Russo Job Access provided some valuable insight into job search training and preparing for that all important interview.

Putting all they’d learnt into practice, the penultimate week of the program saw the students participate in a real life job interview, with a difference. Beautifully attired and armed with shining new resumes and job applications, the students were put through their paces by interviewers from Sarina Russo Job Access, the City of Yarra and NMIT. To ensure the students gained the maximum benefit from this experience, they were then given an opportunity for a second interview, this time with the benefit of the detailed feedback received from their interviewers. The second interview proved invaluable to the confidence of the students and all completed the experience with a much relieved smile.

With the Graduation Ceremony came one final challenge for the students, speaking in front of their peers and guests. Each student did an amazing job of presenting what they have gained from the experience and those activities most enjoyed. Congratulations to the entire NMIT YAMEC VCAL class for their participation in the Work Readiness Program 2011.

We would like to thank all those who contributed their valuable time and expertise to the Program as without whom, it would not be possible.

Program Partners: NMIT, INLLEN, City of Yarra, Sarina Russo Job Access, Centre for Work and Learning and the Futures Club, Brotherhood of St. Laurence.
