INLLEN operates in an area of Melbourne that is demographically, economically and culturally diverse, which comprises the municipalities of Darebin, Moreland and Yarra. More than 340,000 people reside in the region with around 30,000 young people 10 – 19 years of age calling the area home.
Historically this area was the centre of Melbourne’s manufacturing industry. The concentrated nature of industry within the region contributed to large numbers of post war migrants settling within its suburbs, resulting in a demographically diverse community across the INLLEN region. The inner north experienced waves of migrants in the 1970’s, 1980’s and 90’s includes people from Asia, and the Middle East who have continued to settle within the three municipalities. More recently, there has been a major influx of refugees from Africa and different parts of the Middle East.
The Inner North particularly Darebin has one of the highest concentrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people in Victoria. The area has a high concentration of public housing with associated issues of poverty and marginalization. The Victorian Government has funded Neighborhood Renewal projects within the INLLEN catchment area to build community capital and improve outcomes for local residents.
